英語への教室◆内容紹介

１７年間、日本人に英語を教えてきたネイティブスピーカーに、
英語の勉強の仕方を教えてもらいませんか？

　御茶の水にアテネフランセという1913年から続く語学学校があります。その学校の英語科のジェームズ・レオーネ先生が、英語を学習する際に役立つ Tips （ちょっとした秘訣）と英語学校で習える様々な授業・学習法を紹介するコーナーです。
　■英語の学校ではどういう風に授業をするのでしょうか？
　■本当に身につく学習計画とは？
英語の山は自分の努力で登るもの。ですが、まずはよいガイドに確実なルートを尋ねましょう。これから英語の勉強を始める人も、勉強がつまらなくなってきてしまった人も、きっと手掛かりがみつかります！　ネイティブの英語をぜひ覗いてみてください。
　１回目「イントロダクション」は、勉強を始める前のこころの準備篇。２回目からはアドバイスと勉強法の紹介が始まります。最初のテーマは Listening の予定です。

Introduction-イントロダクション

Today it is recognized that English is the international language and is indispensable for many activities, from business to travel. Here in Japan, English education is a large industry with a wide range of schools and institutions where Japanese people can learn the language at their leisure.

今日では、英語は国際語であり、ビジネスから旅行まで、多くの活動にとってなくてはならないものだと認められています。日本では英語教育は巨大産業となっていて、いろいろな学校や教育施設が幅広く作られており、日本の人たちは時間のあるときに英語を習うことができます。

Athenee Francais, near Ochanomizu station, is one such example. Although known primarily for its French language classes, the school also offers an English program with many different types of courses. Students who study English here come from varying backgrounds and age groups. With the exception of a few specialized grammar courses which are taught by Japanese, teachers in the English program are native speakers, mostly from the USA, Britain and Canada. Students who come here to study English may do so for a variety of reasons. The program offers such classes as TOEIC, TOEFL, Business English, writing, News Discussion, as well as a regular program with level 1(beginner) to 6(advanced). In general though, it might be said that the majority of the students who come here want to improve their aural-oral skills, so therefore much of the emphasis in this school's English classes is on listening and speaking activities.

御茶ノ水駅の近くにあるアテネフランセはそうした学校のひとつです。もともとフランス語の学校として知られていますが、この学校には英語科もあって、タイプの異なるたくさんのコースを提供しており、経歴、年齢ともさまざまな学生さん達が学びにきています。特別な文法コースには日本人の先生もいますが、ここの英語科の講師はネイティブスピーカーで、主にアメリカ、イギリスそしてカナダ出身です。さまざまな理由をもって来ている学生さん達のために、わたしたちは、初級から上級まで６段階にレベル分けしたレギュラーコースのほかにもTOEIC、TOEFL、ビジネス英語、ライティング、ニュースディスカッションなどのクラスを提供するようにしています。しかし一般的にいってここに来る学生さんの大半は、口述の能力を伸ばしたいと考えているようです。ですから、わが校の英語教育の重点はリスニングとスピーキング能力の育成に置かれています。

This month I would like to discuss listening and mention a few things you can do to improve your listening skills.

今月はリスニングについてお話ししようと思います。リスニング能力を伸ばすいくつかのコツについても触れるつもりです。

Speaking-スピーキング

Today we will discuss speaking skills and offer some advice on how you might improve your conversational English.

今日はスピーキングの技術についてお話しましょう。英会話の力をのばす方法についてもアドバイスします。

Pronunciation-発音

Today we will discuss pronunciation problems and different types of English pronunciation.

今日は発音の問題と、それから英語の発音のタイプについて話しましょう。

Reading-リーディング

This month's topic is Reading. Reading is an often overlooked skill in language learning. This may be because many people beleave that Listening and Speaking skills are of more practical use in their every day lives. While for some people this may be true; reading is a basic language skill from which the learner can reap many rewards. Extensive reading in a foreign language is an excellent way to increase vocabulary. To begin, ask yourself: What kind of reading am I interested in? Let's look at some different types of reading materials.

今月の話題はリーディングです。リーディングというのは、受験英語でなく語学を習う際には見過ごされやすいスキルです。たぶん、多くの人が、リスニングやスピーキング能力のほうが毎日生活する上でより実用性が高いと思うからでしょう。人によってはその通りかも知れませんが、しかし読む能力というもは得るものの多い基本技能です。多読こそが外国語の語彙をふやす最良の方法なのです。手始めに自分自身に聞いてみてください：自分の興味があるのはどういう種類のリーディングだろう？　さあ、タイプの違ういくつかの読み物をみていきましょう。

Writing-ライティング

This month’s topic is writing. Writing is probably one of the most difficult skills to master in a foreign language. This is because it is an active skill which is quite different from speaking. It is entirely possible for someone to be able to speak a language well and not be able to write it. Even many native speakers of a language sometimes have trouble writing it and of course there are even some native speakers who cannot write their own language at all. Lets take a look at some of the difficulties associated with mastering writing and then talk about things you can do to improve it.

今月の話題はライティングです。ライティングは多分、習得が最も難しい外国語スキルの一つでしょう。というのは、話すのとはまったく違った意味でアクティブなスキルだからです。ひとつの言語を上手に話せるのに書くことはできないなどということも、まったく何の不思議もなくありえることなのです。ネイティブスピーカーでさえ、文章を書こうとすると苦労してしまうことは多いですし、それどころか、ネイティブなのに自分の言語をまったく書けないという人だっています。では、ライティングをマスターするのにつきものの困難をいくつか見てみましょう。それから自分で出来るライティング上達法についてもお話しします。

This month's topic is dictionaries. I would like to express my thoughts on the use of dictionaries by students in the classroom and make some recommendations about their use.	今月のトピックは辞書です。まず教室での学生さん達の辞書の使い方について、わたしの考えを示してから、おすすめする使い方についてお話ししたいと思います。
First of all, it goes without saying that dictionaries are an indispensable tool for any language learner. They provide crucial information about the meanings of unknown words and the better ones also provide information about pronunciation and usage. Of course nowadays they are available in electronic versions, which make them convenient to carry around.	言うまでもないことですが、語学の学習者にとって辞書はなくてはならないものです。辞書は知らない単語の意味について重要な情報をくれますし、さらにいいものになると、発音や使い方についての知識も与えてくれます。もちろん、最近はそれができる電子辞書があって、持ち歩きに便利になっています。

This month's topic is vocabulary improvement. Many students of English wonder about the best ways to increase their vocabulary. They often complain that while they can basically understand English grammar and sentence structure, they are frustrated by their lack of a sophisticated vocabulary. Here I will try to make a few simple suggestions about ways to increase your vocabulary.

This month’s topic is something I call “classroom attitude”. This refers to the behavior and expectations of students and teachers in a classroom .

今月の話題は「授業態度」とでもいうようなものです。教室での学生と先生双方の振る舞いや、お互いが相手に期待していることについてです。

Narration-語り

This month’s topic is narration. Narration refers to relating an event or series of events to a listener or group of listeners. In simpler terms, it means telling a story.

今月のトピックはナレーションです。ナレーションとは、あるひとつの、もしくは一連の出来事について人に物語ることをいいます。要するに、話を語って聞かせるということです。
